La Crosse.
In addition to the survey, they created a heat map to see possible connections
based on survey responses and location of housing. They found that 50% of
students who drive to campus live within a 20 minute walk of campus. They
also found a density of students driving who live north of La Crosse Street and
on Vine Street west of West Ave. Ericson explained some possibilities for why
those students might be driving including that students are likely having to
cross dangerous intersections and in doing so this could be adding to their
commute time.
Ericson explained that after collecting this data they decided to partner with
the La Crosse Area Planning Committee to do a walk audit in these off-campus
housing areas. Many people who participated in the walk audit confirmed their
thoughts on concerns over dangerous intersections and the uncomfortable
pedestrian experience on West Ave and La Crosse Street.
Ericson stated they plan on continuing to do this survey on a two year basis.
