Agenda Items:
Safe Routes to School Overview and Presentation.
1.
The County Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Coordinators (Chelsey Boldon and
Nikki Kvam) provided an overview and presentation on the Safe Routes to
School program.
They stated that the goal of the program is to enable and encourage kids to
walk and bike to school. They stated that they want to make the program
sustainable so even if the coordinators were not there, schools could continue
on with programming and advocacy.
The SRTS program has a host school program which gives schools money to
participate in encouragement activities. The La Crosse Schools involved
include Northside/Coulee Montessori, Hintgen, State Road, Summit, and Logan
Middle School.
Randi Pueschner provided context on being a school liason. She stated that
Summit Elementary does a bike bus where she picks kids up at each
intersection on Lakeshore Drive.
The SRTS coordinators stated they assist with bike rodeos, walk to school days,
slide into safety, and other community/school events.
Bike Registration and Theft Prevention.
2.
Randi Pueschner put together and went through the attached presentation
about Garage 529. The mission of this nonprofit/website is to put a database
together of stolen bikes. The owner can input information about their stolen
bike for other members in the community to see. If the bike were to show up in
another community it is easier for members to find the owner of the bike rather
than each community having their own registration system. It is free for users
but would cost the city $1200 a year to use.
Sergeant Pataska said she could talk internally to see if this is something the
Police Department would be interested in.
Discussion on priority projects and implementation of the 2024 Bicycle and
Pedestrian Master Plan.
3.
CM Sleznikow noted the subcommittee needs to follow open meeting law and
be recreated with members only for future reference, and he asked staff to go
over minutes of what was discussed. Staff provided an overview of the
notes/minutes of everything discussed at the meeting, which are also attached
to the agenda.
Young suggested protected bike lanes on Clinton Street and Ranger Drive
should be considered a priority project with the consideration of a quick-build
project. Sward stated first parking would have to be studied on Clinton and
public engagement on the possibility of removing parking.
Updates (Bike Rodeo, Bike Friendly Community, Committee Member
updates, etc.).
4.
Staff reminded the Committee the Bike Rodeo would take place September 19,
2024. Staff stated the Bike Friendly Community survey is open until
mid-October.
Other updates include:
-Drift Cycle received grant to expand for five new stations, four will be on the
north side.
-Week without Driving is September 20-October 6.
Call for Future Agenda Items.
5.
Young brought up concerns with the traffic circle signs on greenways no longer
being in the traffic circle and are now moved to the boulevard.
